Outdoor Skills
Students will learn core wilderness skills that will help them become self reliant in the outdoors. Whether you're planning a camping trip with your family, preparing for an emergency or just want to get out into nature this class will give you the tools and confidence to do it!
You should be able to hike up to 1 mile with your pack and perform moderate physical activities.
Course begins 8:30am on the first day.
Skills students will learn & practice:
- Camp site selection and tent setup
- Fire building & safety with a fire steel
- Leave No Trace principals
- Water filtration and purification techniques
- Cordage & knot basics
- Tools - knife, saw and axe selection, safety & usage
- Wilderness First Aid basics
- Intro to map & compass navigation
Required Equipment List
- backpack
- sleeping bag
- sleeping pad (closed cell foam or air)
- camp pillow
- water bottle
- cup, bowl, plate, spork (mess kit)
- bic lighter
- locking folding or fixed blade knife
- headlamp or flashlight (w/extra batteries)
- hiking boots or trail shoes
- rain jacket or poncho
- weather appropriate layers & wool socks
- emergency whistle
- personal First Aid kit
- 2 ziplock bags (gallon size)
- small daysack
Optional but recommended equipment
- ferro rod and fire kit
- Baseplate compass
- notebook & pencil
- small camp chair or sit pad
- toiletries kit
- swimsuit in summer months (depending on location)
- compression sack for sleeping bag
What we provide
- 1 person tent for each student
- cooking equipment and fuel
- axe & saw or other camp tools
- water filtration equipment
- cordage for knots
- ferro rods to share (1 per four students)
- baseplate compass to share (1 per four students)
- group first aid kit
- bear canister where needed
You will have access to your car during the course. Pit toilets are available next to site, comfort station by parking area.
Weather- Students should be prepared for various weather including cold and rain.
Students under 18 must be accompanied by an adult that is also registered for the course.
This is a wilderness skills course, not a resort vacation. You are expected to be willing & able to participate and perform your own tasks.
Sorry but pets are not allowed at the sites we visit.
Food will be provided for this course but you will learn to cook it yourself. There will be a mix of freeze dried hiking & base camp style meals. We will not be able to accommodate special diets, if you have special dietary restriction plan to bring your own food. Tuition adjustments will not be made if you decide to bring your own food. Please make sure to eat breakfast before you arrive on Day 1.
